Product details

In March 1966, Fritz Bauer wrote to his friend Thomas Harlan about the tragedy of the West German trials against Nazi war criminals. Bauer looked back with resignation and bitterness, particularly at two trials that had taken place at the District Court in Frankfurt am Main. One was the Auschwitz trial, which is commonly associated with Bauer. The other was the scandalous verdict in the case against two associates of Adolf Eichmann, Hermann Krumey and Otto Hunsche, who had deported 438,000 Jews from Hungary to Auschwitz in the summer of 1944 alongside the death transport. Why did Bauer refer to the Nazi trials as a tragedy in hindsight? Had the trials not achieved what Bauer primarily and explicitly aimed for in the cases against Nazi criminals? Even today, relatives still stand.
