Product details

The Munich architect Fritz Landauer (1883-1968), who was regarded by his contemporaries as a specialist in synagogue construction, was one of the few outstanding representatives of the New Building movement in Southern Germany. Influenced by the late historicist and locally rooted architectural tradition of Munich, where Fritz Landauer lived as a freelance architect until 1934, he developed a modern architectural perspective in the 1920s that distinctly set him apart from the cultural climate of his surroundings. An examination of the numerous construction projects that Landauer undertook in commissions and various competitions reveals both his artistic development and the possibilities and limitations of implementing formal-aesthetic as well as constructional concepts. Landauer's biography exemplifies the exceedingly complex process of the exclusion of Jewish architects from the profession.
