The early years of the development of Freemasonry in Austria and the Habsburg territories are documented for the first time in chronological order. Starting from the building guilds of the Middle Ages and their guild-oriented customs, the 18th century sees a multitude of different lodges in the lands under the Habsburgs: alchemically oriented, Christian-oriented, and field lodges for the officers of the regiments. There are adoption lodges where the wives and daughters of the brothers gather, and lodges that, as usual, do not admit Blacks, Jews, or those of different or non-belief. However, some Freemason lodges transcend societal prejudices: In Vienna, for example, there is the Freemason lodge 'To the 7 Heavens', where around 1780 the Order of the 'Asian Brothers' is founded, and where Jews are admitted for the first time.
