The veterinarian James Wight, born in 1914, is a natural talent for whimsical storytelling under his pseudonym James Herriot. Even in his fourth book about his life as a veterinarian, it is evident that he is wholeheartedly dedicated to his work, approaching his patients—the animals—as well as their owners, who sometimes need his care more than the four-legged ones, with loving understanding. Herriot also reflects on the changing rural life, which is no longer as tranquil as in the good old days. He sadly observes how many of the small farms are disappearing because their quirky owners have had to give up the struggle. However, he also notes with deep joy that there are other things that remain unchanged: the beautiful landscape of the Yorkshire Dales with its rolling hills and moors, which spread silence and peace.
