An ethnography of coffee production from producer to consumer, focusing on the impacts of global commodity chains. West examines the process of how coffee is grown, harvested, sorted, shipped, and served in distant coffee houses, originating from the highlands of Papua New Guinea. She illustrates how coffee becomes a commodity, the various forms of labor involved, and how coffee shapes the lives and understanding of those who grow, process, export, sell, and consume it.
