From Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe to Karl May's Old Shatterhand: Active, autonomous, and sovereign literary figures who experience expansive adventures, achieve great feats, and embody bravery, grandeur, and assertiveness are predominantly male well into the 20th century. As protagonists of the traditional adventure novel, they express the grand fantasies of youthful readers through their remarkable traits and serve as identification figures despite all the justified criticism of Eurocentrism and male heroism in adventure literature. Today, literary adventure, particularly in its modern adaptation in fantastic children's and young adult literature, is no longer a domain exclusive to male characters. Based on the archetype of the traditional adventurer, the author analyzes three current popular fantasy adventures.
