German foreign policy is to be more proactive, decisive, and substantial. With this demand, Federal President Gauck fueled the debate about the future of German foreign policy at the Munich Security Conference in 2014, a discussion that had already been initiated with the appointment of Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Whether and to what extent this self-reflection process actually indicates a new German foreign policy is examined from various perspectives in this volume. Authors from political and academic backgrounds discuss this question in relation to the fundamental conceptual tensions of the discourse, the historical and societal foundations, as well as regarding the basic foreign policy instruments and goals of German foreign policy.
