A guide to Schandau and its surroundings from the year 1893. Bad Schandau is located on the right bank of the Elbe River, directly adjacent to the Saxon Switzerland National Park in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains; the national park center is situated in the town. The original town center nestles against the steep sandstone cliffs of the northern Elbe bank and partially squeezes into the narrow valley of the Kirnitzsch River. Schandau was first mentioned in a document in 1445 and gained the status of a town in 1467 due to its important location as a trading post on the Elbe, granted by a council constitution. Since around 1800, Schandau has been a spa and summer resort. In 1877, the town was provided with a permanent crossing over the Elbe with the Carolabrücke. In 1920, the town was officially awarded the title "Bad," and in 1936 it was designated as a Kneipp spa. Illustrated with numerous black-and-white images and advertisements from that time.
