Product details

The origin of the name "Siebengebirge" is not clearly defined. The earliest mention of the name (Moller, 1590) is "Sieben Berge" (septem montes). Depending on the direction of view, either upstream or downstream of the Rhine, one can indeed recognize about seven mountains, although they are not always the same and not necessarily the highest. From the Cologne Cathedral and the Kölntriangle, these seven mountains can be distinctly identified. Additionally, the number seven, which is also considered magical, seems fitting for a mountain range that, until the early 19th century, was regarded as forbidding, difficult to penetrate, eerie, and a setting for legends and ghost stories. For example, according to one legend, the Rhine was dammed at this point because there was a chain of hills. Behind this chain lay a city that suffered from a lack of water. Therefore, the citizens decided to hire seven giants to free the Rhine.
