With several hundred diagnoses for mental disorders now established, the international classification systems DSM and ICD have arrived. Is this still justified in any way? And what purpose do diagnoses for mental impairments serve? Tom Levold and Hans Lieb seek answers in their conversation. At the beginning of psychotherapy, standardized diagnostics that involve recognizing symptoms and providing a diagnosis can be helpful, especially for the therapists themselves. It gives them confidence. However, as therapy progresses, it is advisable to distance oneself from the overly restrictive templates of current diagnoses and broaden the perspective to better understand the client in their human depth.
