The five chapters of this book address religion from various interrelated perspectives. Their aim is to utilize theoretical insights from different areas of social theory to assess the current state of religion. The topics discussed include: (1) the social function of religion, (2) the evolutionary changes in its dogma, (3) the religious framing of the problem of contingency, (4) secularization in the sense of a religion-specific framing of society as the environment of the religious system, and (5) the possibilities for organizing the religious system itself.
