In a case study in the German machinery and plant engineering sector, Julia Duwe demonstrates that leaders can influence simultaneous radical and incremental innovation through their daily communicative actions. The presented model of ambidextrous-oriented leadership communication illustrates how communication from leaders enables, orchestrates, and connects both exploration and exploitation. In the course of digitalization, industrial companies increasingly find themselves in the tension between exploitation (expansion of existing business, incremental innovation) and exploration (venturing into new territory, radical innovation) - a concept discussed in academia under the term organizational ambidexterity.
