This work provides current empirical research findings on the topic of employment references based on a critical analysis of the current reference practices. They indicate an urgent need for improvement. The authors present a wide range of concrete and practical recommendations for HR managers, companies, and legislators. The authors thoroughly demonstrate how the quality and precision, and thus the usefulness of employment references for personnel selection, can be enhanced.
