Maria Richter examines the career orientation process of secondary school students in her empirical study and analyzes whether there are differences in this regard among youths of different ethnic backgrounds. The author particularly focuses on the influence of parents and peers. Her analyses show that existing deficits among youths with a migration background can primarily be attributed to parents' limited knowledge of the German education system and a lack of integration into the labor market. Additionally, the results indicate institutional composition effects, meaning that the makeup of a classroom's student body is relevant. In particular, youths with a migration background benefit from the career-relevant knowledge of their classmates. Maria Richter thus provides new insights into the career orientation process.
