Along the three cybernetic key concepts of communication, calculation, and control, Benjamin Seibel's historical study reconstructs the genesis of a political regulatory knowledge that originated in the military research laboratories of World War II and continues to evolve with the updates of digital technologies to the present day. The author demonstrates that in the discourses of cybernetics in the early 1940s, not only those peculiar devices that we now call computers are discussed, but also an ensemble of potential governance techniques: in the cybernetic utopia, the entire society is meant to resemble a perfect information system - and consequently, it should also be governable through such systems.
