The book deals with previously unknown contexts of Theodor W. Adorno's critique of psychoanalysis, particularly the attempted "Aryanization" by neoanalysis at the Göring Institute during the Nazi era. Wolfgang Bock takes an important starting point from Adorno's essay "The Revised Psychoanalysis," which was published in 1952 in the journal Psyche. The author demonstrates through a close reading of a previously unpublished English lecture manuscript from 1946 that Adorno, along with Jewish analysts forced into exile, primarily opposed the adaptation of Freud's drive theory by Karen Horney, against which he also argued in America. He is by no means alone in this stance. However, starting in 1950, Adorno no longer openly addresses these motives in Germany, as he increasingly seeks to make a living in light of the lack of other alternatives.
