The United Nations are no longer merely an intergovernmental organization. Non-state actors such as non-governmental organizations and companies are increasingly involved in the processes of norm-setting, implementation, and enforcement taking place there. This textbook introduces the work of the UN and takes into account the emergence of global governance within the organization by developing an analytical framework for examining new modes of global governance and applying it to five selected areas: peacekeeping, arms control and disarmament, human rights protection, development policy, and environmental policy.
