Social relations of difference, such as gender or national-ethno-cultural belonging orders, are structural features of social reality. They shape biographies, interaction situations, and institutions - including the university. Insofar as relations of difference structure the university setting where this subject matter becomes a topic, the university discourse on difference is simultaneously mediated by the subject at hand. This book contains analyses of a documented episode from a university seminar that deals with practices of differentiation in migration societies. The episode is examined from four perspectives - the claim to validity of university knowledge, irritations in teaching, experiential reference as a practice of legitimation, and the university as a site of knowledge transformation - and commented on in a way that is general.
