Rodion Groll develops a modeling approach to describe transport processes in thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, which are primarily interpreted as continuum mechanical processes, as a sum of discrete particle movements. Temperature gradients influence how the movement of electrically neutral and charged particles affects the spatial and temporal changes of quantities considered continuous. A dispersed particle movement underlying these flows is referred to in the macroscopic description as non-material transport or diffusion. The author employs statistical methods that have previously been used in turbulence modeling for the meso- to macro-scale range to now mathematically describe the physical context of phase transitions in multiphase mixtures, from molecular gas dynamics to plasma diffusion, in the micro- to meso-scale range.
