This textbook develops a sociology of disability for the first time consistently against a body sociological background. This is done through continuous reference to empirical research findings as well as historical and cultural-anthropological examples. It provides a solid overview of the sociological dimensions of physical, cognitive, and mental disabilities. Through image interpretations and exemplary studies on topics such as gaze, inclusion, freak shows, and disability in National Socialism, it demonstrates the ways of thinking and research perspectives of disability sociology. For the second edition, statistical data has been updated, more recent research has been taken into account, and content expansions have been made. Important concepts have been further developed, including the triad of Imaginary-Real-Symbolic linked to Jacques Lacan and the delineation.
