Product details
This volume brings together recent research on a significant German philosopher. Emilie du Châtelet (1706-1749) enjoyed a high reputation during her lifetime. Her aim to connect Newtonian physics with the metaphysics of Leibniz's theory of motion made her interesting to German philosophers who sought to appropriate her philosophy and her work for their own purposes. The influence of her writings is evident in the fact that Kant published his first work in response to her essay on Vis Viva. According to Eberhard, Kant was influenced by du Châtelet's ideas. The collection presents texts that explain Emilie du Châtelet's influence on German Enlightenment philosophy. It addresses the connections between du Châtelet and Kant, du Châtelet's hypothesis theory in relation to Euler's probability theory, and the interest of the Wolffians in du Châtelet.
