Extensive funding programs aim to create an entrepreneurial-friendly climate at universities. However, there is currently little evidence regarding the general suitability of universities as "entrepreneurial incubators." Sascha G. Walter investigates whether and how university departments can stimulate the entrepreneurial interest of their students and to what extent the desire for future self-employment is primarily influenced by personal determinants. Based on a nationwide survey of 389 professors and 2,718 students (from 24 and 66 departments, respectively), he demonstrates through hierarchical linear modeling that the entrepreneurial inclination of students, but not of female students, is directly shaped by department-related influences.
