The media scene is in turmoil. The predictions of highly praised institutes regarding the potential successes of the "New Economy" were grossly exaggerated. E-business still has a chance; however, progress is not happening as quickly, and the outcomes are not as substantial. At the same time, we are experiencing the deepest crisis in print media since 1945. Springer Verlag and Süddeutsche Verlag announced at the end of 2001 that they would cut 10 percent of their workforce. FAZ has discontinued its "Berliner Seiten" and is also considering strict cost-cutting measures, similar to Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Frankfurter Rundschau is compelled to seek financial assistance from Frankfurter Sparkasse and Dresdner Bank. There, too, layoffs due to operational reasons are unavoidable. All newspapers have seen significant declines in classified advertising markets (job postings, real estate, automotive market).
