Holger Pontow demonstrates that inter-organizational information systems promise numerous potential benefits in the segmented maritime transport chain. To qualitatively and quantitatively assess these benefits prior to investment decisions, he primarily employs methods and tools from the fields of business process management, specifically business process modeling using BPMN, and decision theory in his research. It becomes evident, particularly based on the conveyed understanding of cross-organizational business processes, that besides organizations responsible for transport and handling, shippers should also utilize appropriate communication systems to realize the theoretically possible benefits in practice.
