In organizations, there are increasingly more occasions that cannot be regulated solely or effectively through hierarchical authority. Often, in such situations, the only option is to foster cooperation through communication, power, or trust. The concept of lateral leadership - leading sideways - encompasses considerations on how to shape communication processes, the formation of power arenas, and the establishment of trust (or distrust) relationships. It is not about idealizing communication, power, or trust as the new mechanisms of control par excellence, but rather about demonstrating how these forms of influence can be employed in the shadow of the formal structure.
