The author demonstrates in an empirical study of data from two large teacher studies that the average Abitur grade is not a suitable central predictor for the multi-criteria professional success of teachers. Rather, practical study success from the preparatory service has a high predictive power for later professional success. These findings make an important contribution to empirical educational research and to the evaluation of the appropriateness of allocation criteria for university places in teacher training programs.
