To determine the significance of sports as an economic sector, it was necessary to assess household consumption for active participation in sports, as well as expenditures related to sports interests without actually engaging in the sport itself. Through a representative survey of over 18,000 individuals, the authors estimate total consumption between 111 and 138 billion euros for the year. The total expenditures calculated in two models also include sports travel and trips to and from sports activities.
