Marcus Herntrei explores the potential role of citizens in shaping sustainable tourism destinations. Through extensive empirical research in four case study regions with varying degrees of experience in citizen participation (the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, Vulkaneifel, and the municipalities of Naturns/Italy and Werfenweng/Austria), he examines the understanding of participation among key stakeholders. Against the backdrop that tourism destinations are not only economic spaces but primarily living environments, the author highlights the triggers, expectations, and objectives associated with the introduction of citizen participation, while also illuminating the opportunities and limitations of citizen involvement in tourism.
