How does the open city constitute itself after a long duration of fortification as a new spatial existence? Turin, which held an important geopolitical function in the pre-modern era due to its location at the foothills of the Alps between France and Habsburg, showcases two significant architectural ensembles: the late Baroque Superga Church with its axially defined outdoor space and the Neoclassical Piazza Vittorio Emanuele with the picturesque church Gran Madre di Dio integrated into it. Demilitarization meant not only destruction but also the creation of cultural spaces. The book illustrates that the architectures initiated by political events on the outskirts of Turin made the city perceivable in very specific ways, thus contributing to the political reordering of the city and the country.
