The general section covers the petrography and geology of the bedrock and cover rocks, explaining their formation and interrelationships based on the latest findings. Additional chapters address thermal springs in the Black Forest, hydrology, erosion and karst formation, mining, metal smelting, pollution, energy production, and geotourism. The excursion section presents geology, rocks, minerals, and deposits through 21 excursions in the Black Forest with 265 outcrops. Excursions to areas adjacent to the Black Forest, such as Hegau and Kaiserstuhl, have been omitted as there are already geological guides available for those regions. In addition to detailed directions, Gauss-Krüger coordinates facilitate location finding.
