In this volume, Manfred Speidel compiles 20 writings by Bruno Taut from the three years of his emigration to Japan, 1933-1936. Bruno Taut, the architect of large housing estates in Berlin during the 1920s, emigrated to Japan between 1933 and 1936. His hope for architectural work there remained largely unfulfilled. He was able to earn a living through designs for utilitarian objects and furniture that required high-quality Japanese craftsmanship. Approximately 300 designs and numerous texts on decorative arts have been preserved. However, his main focus became the study of Japanese architecture and culture, particularly residential buildings. He wrote many articles that were published in Japanese translation or in French or English in various magazines. These writings are compiled in this volume. An introductory chapter by Manfred Speidel discusses Taut's escape.
