Motifs from Ovid's Metamorphoses appear in all conceivable genres of representative art as well as in the decorative arts. One medium where text and visual representation stand in direct relation to each other is the illustrated book. Since the late 15th century, countless editions of Metamorphoses have been produced, featuring woodcuts, engravings, and etchings. The iconographic repertory provides an overview of the series of illustrations within the text-accompanying print graphics and simultaneously highlights continuity and change in the mode of representation. Volume I.1 documents the earliest examples of print graphic illustrations of Metamorphoses, where two long-established families of images dominate: one traces back to the woodcuts printed in Bruges by Colard Mansion in 1484 for the Bible des Poëtes, a French adaptation of the transformation legends.
