Since the invention of image and book printing, their media presence and communicative character have been inseparably linked to architecture. No building is created without a sketch and construction plan. Media, as transmitters, also construct the meaning of the content. This is exemplified in the book through architectural drawings and their hierarchy into an objective-scientific plan and a merely popular-perspective image representation. Our perception of architecture through media is also subject to a historical imprint. Contributions from the perspectives of architectural, media, and image history place the image media of architecture—from Alberti to El Lissitzky—within the context of historical media research.
