The anthology traces the emergence of the Werkbund in the Bohemian lands. It outlines an interest group composed of representatives from art, culture, economy, industry, and politics, which was continued through two independent Werkbund associations in accordance with national diversity: the Czechoslovak Werkbund and the Werkbund of Germans in Czechoslovakia are presented for the first time from a comparative perspective through programmatic contributions as actors in the Czechoslovak cultural scene. The texts reveal the puzzle of a socio-political differentiation within the new state, whose facets are illustrated with images of functional objects from the publication and exhibition contexts of both Werkbund associations - showcasing luxury products as well as simpler everyday items.
