Nelly Sachs was born in Berlin in 1891 and died in Stockholm in 1970. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1966. "To age in pain," wrote Olof Lagercrantz in his obituary, "and to shatter under the weight of suffering will become an experience for more and more people. Nelly Sachs is one of the poets we will need the most in the future." Keeping this truth in mind, Hilde Domin has curated a selection from the complete lyrical works of Nelly Sachs. She spoke of the power of her poetry a decade ago: "Your poetry keeps the calamity alive... And at the same time, you redeem from the calamity. We poets have always brought with us the horror and at the same time the catharsis of horror.".
