Else Ury's "Nesthäkchen and the World War. A Story for Girls Aged 8-12" was first published in 1922 as Volume 4 of the highly popular and successful Nesthäkchen series by Meidinger's Youth Literature Publishing House in Berlin. In this series, Else Ury depicts the life of Annemarie Braun from childhood to old age based on a traditional image of women and family. In the 10th volume, she even welcomes her first great-grandchild. After many reissues, a film adaptation of the first three volumes of Nesthäkchen was made for ZDF in 1983. Unlike the other nine volumes in the series, the 4th volume did not see a reissue in West Germany after 1945. Was it too much "hurray patriotism"? Did Else Ury, like many of her fellow writers in the early war years, succumb to nationalist thinking? After all, the book ended up on the Allies' censorship list in 1945.
