The author Georg Büchmann (1822-1884) was a philologist. Büchmann's greatest work was the collection and publication of the German treasury of quotations as winged words. A winged word is a saying, expression, or name that is frequently cited in broader circles, regardless of the language, and whose historical origin or literary source can be traced. The book was so well received that an annual reissue was initially necessary. He prefaced this book with the following motto: "Who could expect more from me? For everyone, I am a world! A garden of memories for the elderly, a field of discovery for the youth." Since Büchmann published his treasury of quotations, his name itself has become a winged word, applied to all people who enjoy quoting. Known for his frequent use of quotations was Chancellor Prince Bernhard von Bülow.
