Silke Schwarz addresses the contentious issue of gender justice. The transdisciplinary theoretical section connects common theories of social change from the fields of sociology, gender studies, and psychology, concluding with an ethnography of Indonesian gender relations. In the results section, the author analyzes, through methodological triangulation, how one's role and psychological identity are experienced within partnership, parenthood, professional life, and the community—specifically, how subjectivity is experienced in a Central Javanese village, how positioning occurs in everyday life, and how recognition and participation are experienced or attained. The book is interspersed with recurring critical reflections on the author's own approach as an integral part of addressing questions of justice in transcultural, Islam-influenced contexts.
