At the outbreak of war in 1939, Kesselring commanded Air Fleet 1 and received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross in September. During the Western Campaign, Kesselring was at the head of Air Fleet 2. With the start of the campaign in Russia, he directed air operations to support Army Group Center in its assault on Moscow. At the end of November 1941, after being assigned to Italy and Sicily, Kesselring commanded the entire Mediterranean region, including North Africa, as Commander-in-Chief South. After the war, Kesselring went through prisons and courtrooms due to alleged war crimes.
