Product details
For 180 days, photographer Stefan Rosenboom traveled through Japan with his wife and daughter, drawn to a fascinating country that uniquely harmonizes the contradictions of modernity with a rich and still-living tradition. Nippon, a land whose technological products we encounter daily, remains mysteriously foreign to us. This journey is an attempt to touch the soul of Japan; walking along the ancient pilgrimage routes of Kumano Kodo, in the shadow of thousand-year-old cedars on the medicinal island of Yakushima, in the history of Hiroshima, and in the storms of the Daisetsuzan mountains. Japan, then, through the back door. Along the way, Rosenboom meets people full of joy, eager to smile, with a wild determination to help, full of respect and a wonderful lightness. The small family travels with a backpack and tent, staying in youth hostels and simple guesthouses. Their journey takes them from Okinawa in the far south, through the rainforests and beaches of the Kii Peninsula, through the metropolises of Tokyo and Sapporo, and then further north to the sea urchin fishermen of Rishiri, the volcanoes of Hokkaido, and the seaweed harvest in Shiretoko, a UNESCO World Heritage site and home to the large brown bears. Following the great success of his first book "Silja's Travels," the sensitive photographer and author paints a vivid and surprisingly different picture of a family trip through Japan.
