Georg Gottlieb Schmidt (1768-1837) was a professor of mathematics and physics in Giessen and can be regarded as the founder of the Physical Cabinet and the Physical Institute at the University of Giessen. He was one of the most renowned German experimental physicists of his time. He gained national recognition through his mathematical and physical textbooks. Schmidt's Handbook of Natural Philosophy from 1801 was the second most important textbook in the German-speaking world at the beginning of the 19th century. In addition to a presentation of the state of research, this publication lists all writings by and about Georg Gottlieb Schmidt as well as the archival sources. Furthermore, his many years of teaching at the University of Giessen are presented in tabular form.
