Recognizing and distinguishing simple basic shapes is an essential part of child development. Eric Carle introduces children to various shapes such as circles, rectangles, and ellipses on the upper flap pages of his handy playbook. On the lower flap pages, there are many objects from our environment. Upon closer inspection, we discover that each of these images is made up of basic shapes. The moon, for example, is crescent-shaped, its eye is a circle, and its mouth and nose are triangular. The painted picture on the wall is a square.
