Product details

Gertrud Debrunner (1902-2000) was part of the so-called second avant-garde, which helped modern painting in Switzerland to break through before and after World War II. She came from a wealthy industrialist and hotelier family and married an intellectual in 1930, with whom she had two children and lived in Zurich, Stäfa, Uetikon am See, and from 1966 in Biberstein near Aarau. Together with her husband, she got to know figures such as Carola Giedion-Welcker, Hans Arp, and Lilly Klee. On her artistic journey from representational art to abstraction, the psychology of C.G. Jung played an important role. Her engagement with the position of women in society and notions of femininity also contributed to her artistic self-discovery. Over nearly seven decades, she created a body of work that in many ways transcends her time.
