Frankfurt in the 1920s was a vibrant city of art and culture, where numerous art collectors and large museums fostered a flourishing art trade. This golden age came to a sudden end in 1933 with the rise of the National Socialists. The Nazi regime created a new art market that radically excluded Jewish artists, collectors, and dealers, thereby creating a gap for profiteers. The AFGK volume focuses on the protagonists of the art scene in Frankfurt and the surrounding region at that time. Sixteen contributions illuminate both central aspects of looting and forced expropriation during the Nazi regime and the specific roles of individual people and institutions, including the Städel Museum and Liebieghaus.
