Loriot, whose real name was Vicco von Bülow, was born in 1923 in Brandenburg, grew up in Berlin, and last lived by Lake Starnberg. He studied painting and graphic design at the Hamburg State School of Art. His humorous works in Stern, Weltbild, and Quick made him famous. He worked as an author, director, and actor in Ödipussi and Pappa ante portas, two of the most successful German film comedies, and was a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. Loriot passed away in 2011.
