"Captured at Sea": Wrongly accused of murder, Max von Schönberg-Wildauen flees to America and joins the United States Navy, where he quickly rises to the rank of officer thanks to his courage and intelligence. Meanwhile, Police Lieutenant Treskow follows the trail of the true murderer from the streets of Berlin to the seedy bars of San Francisco in order to prove his friend Max's innocence. In both the prairies of the far West and on the high seas, he must face numerous adventures, including an encounter with the famous Apache chief Winnetou. The pirate ship of the feared "Black Captain" ultimately becomes the site of the final showdown. This early version, which Karl May later significantly shortened, of the "Captain Caiman" known from Volume 19 of the Collected Works is of unusual interest to all May enthusiasts and collectors.
