Karl May's last years were overshadowed by legal disputes, where the substantive issues soon took a back seat. Instead, there were malicious personal attacks on the elderly poet in public. The father of "Winnetou" was now, figuratively speaking, placed on the torture stake himself. He defended himself against the smear campaign through several texts that were originally not intended for publication, but now contain invaluable information for biographical research. Volume 83 of the collected works gathers the three most important of those legal documents: A Pulp Publisher (1905), A Pulp Publisher and Its Accomplices (1909), To the 4th Criminal Chamber of the Royal District Court III in Berlin (1910/11). Above all, the first text offers many detailed descriptions from Karl May's time as an editor.
