The two books compiled in this volume of Adorno's "Collected Works" focus on questions of musical practice, unlike the majority of the philosopher and music theorist's other works. In "Composition for Film" and "The Faithful Accompanist," the aim is to progress from an understanding of certain challenges in contemporary interpretation and reception to insights on how to listen to and present new music correctly, as well as how to use new technical media appropriately. This is not approached systematically from a top-down perspective, but rather through the concrete difficulties posed by the subjects, similar to what contemporary pedagogy discusses as exemplary learning.
