The long shadows of history still loom over the political relations between Germany and Poland today. Accordingly, generations of professional historians on both sides of the border have adopted political concerns. Their sometimes pronounced engagement ranged from the struggle over the Versailles border in the interwar period to the project of German-Polish reconciliation in the 1970s. "History as Politics" traces the subject over half a century through various political constellations, revealing remarkable continuities and breaks. The study is understood as a political history of historiography that aims not only to provide deeper insights into the history of German-Polish relations but also to explore the question of the political conditioning and effectiveness of historiography.
