The first volume of the history of the Archdiocese of Freiburg covers the period from the founding of the diocese in 1821/27 to the fall of the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1918. It connects event history and structural history in the sense of modern historiography: both the central historical events (founding and early development, the first Baden church dispute, the synodal movement and German Catholicism, the culture struggle, the position of the new diocese within the liberal state, Old Catholicism) and the diocesan structures (Caritas association, pastoral care, religious orders, ecumenism, church building, etc.) are traced. This is an extremely informative and insightful presentation that is up to date with the latest research.
